Swimmers who compete in Masters events are automatically entered into the British Swimming Masters Decathlon, where their performances from competitions throughout the year accumulate points and are put in a leaderboard. The competition runs from 1st January to 31st December and includes each swimmer’s top 10 swims from the six categories: the four strokes, Distance Freestyle and Individual Medley.

In 2016 our Masters swimmers placed a bet early on where the women took on the men to see who would end up highest in the British team decathlon rankings (with a delicious prize of Prosecco and KitKat Chunkys up for grabs). Right up until the Nationals competition in October, the women were in the lead but with a big boost in points from our ex-coach and senior age group swimmer Gus Veasey, the men jumped up the rankings and ended up higher in the rankings than the ladies.

The year ended with the men finishing 20th and women 55th amongst their respective gender team groups in the British leaderboard.   Special mention must go to two of our squad who finished in the top 75 in the individual rankings; Sophie Castle ranked 67 in the women and Nigel Brown ranked 75 in the men.
