Welcome to Life Saving
Chelmsford City Swimming Club’s Life Saving section offers opportunities for everyone to get involved.
The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) Survive and Save Medallion Awards are suitable for any person who is a confident swimmer and a minimum of 12 years old. The awards are challenging but fun to complete and are arranged into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
The awards teach lifesaving rescue, self-rescue, survival, sport lifesaving skills and also develop swimming ability and fitness.
There are four award areas, the Medallion Awards, the Beach Awards, the Stillwater Awards and the Sport Awards. (You can choose to specialise in one area or learn a broader range of skills by completing multiple awards.)
Chelmsford City Swimming Club currently only run courses for the Medallion awards, but the others are available at some other pools in Essex.
Each award runs over 10 weeks. Bronze has an additional introduction week, to brief candidates about the course and to familiarise themselves with the pool and the instructor. We currently run the Bronze in the Autumn term, Silver in the Spring term and the Gold in Summer term. (There are no sessions during the half terms or school holidays.)
The courses are run at the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre on Wednesday evenings from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. The first hour of each session will be a practical lesson in the pool and the second hour will focus on a classroom-based theory lesson.
Every session will include one of the following:
- Stroke work
- Stamina building
- Speed swimming
- An activity to practice and improve skills.
